In 1896, after a tour of France’s many vineyards, Marcel Ott, a young graduate in agronomy engineering from Alsace, finally found an estate that inspired him: it was in Provence, with the Mediterranean lapping at the shore a mere stone’s throw away. Today cousins Christian and Jean-Francois are partners in running this impressive site and, in 2004, became part of the esteemed Louis Roederer portfolio of wines. And today Domaine Ott comprises three estates in two different appellations, Bandol and Cotes de Provence, Château de Selle, Clos Mireille and Château Romassan. The BY.OTT line is an elegant extension of the Domaines Ott range, made from bought-in grapes but blended and bottled in the new Château de Selle cellar, where part of the winery is exclusively devoted to its production. The rosé is a Gremache-driven blend that includes some Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvedre; it has aromas of citrus fruit and orchard flowers enveloped in spice and is elegant and open on the palate with a finish of appealing length.
