Today there are eleven independent winemakers in Sablet, but perhaps none enjoys a more impressive reputation than the young husband-and-wife team of Jean-Marc and Sophie Autran at Domaine Piaugier. Jean-Marc’s father and grandfather before him were growers, and the wines today are made in the same cellars built by his great-grandfather in 1947. The dominant grape variety is the traditional Grenache, with complementary plantings of Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Counoise and Carignan for the reds and Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussane, and Viognier for the whites. “La Grange” is mostly Grenache with small amounts of Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan blended in, all sourced from vines that are roughly 45 years of age. Done entirely in concrete, the wine shows great concentration, balance, and freshness.
