The Vilain family has been cultivating vines in the Chablis region for several generations, starting with brothers Henri and Clovis in the early years of the 20th Century. The name of the estate, Ecuelle (which means "hot bowl"), comes from the tradition of vineyard workers warming up their meals in terra-cotta bowls out in the vineyards. Claire and Gerard Vilain, the current owners, work and manage the estate with their children Marianne, Marie-France, Guillaume and Jeanne. All vineyard and cellar work is done exclusively by the family. Coteaux Bourguignons is a regional-level appellation, meaning that the grapes can come from anywhere in the entire Burgundy region, from Auxerre in the north to Beaujolais in the south; in this case, however, it simply indicates the vineyard in question lies outside the Chablis designation. This is a fresh, fruity Chardonnay with aromas and flavors of green apples, medium acidity, and light mineralitty.
