The late 1960s into the 1970s saw a major shift in Greek winemaking, a turn from quantity (large-scale bulk wine companies) to quality, with young winemakers for their viticultural education, returning home to start small-scale boutique operations where the focus was on exploring the possibilities for making wine that truly reflected the characters of their native regions. Among this wave of boutique vintners was Lefteris Glinavros, who sought his vinous education in Bordeaux, then returned to his native Epirus to found Domaine Glinavros in 1978. Today his son Thomas runs the estate, which comprises 50 acres of vines in multiple plots sprinkled among high perches in this semi-mountainous region, all planted largely to the native varietals of Debina, Vlahiko, and Bekari, Paleokerisio is a semi-sparkling, semi-dry “orange” wine (the color the result of skin contact during fermentation), made mostly from Debina, a white grape, with s small amount of Vlahiko (red) blended in; it is aromatically complex while both rich and refreshing on the palate, exhibiting flavors of apple butter with a mild oxidation and just the slightest hint of vanilla and spice.
