Marco De Bartoli is considered one of Sicily's winemaking pioneers for his longstanding commitment to the native white grape varieties, Grillo and Zibibbo; from his Samperi winery just west of Marsala he produces several wines made from Grillo, including this one. Vecchio Samperi, named for the district that houses De Bartoli's country estate, is made using the traditional solera method, in which small quantities of young wine are added to wines of older vintages as they pass through a sequence of wooden barrels (the way Sherry is made); the result is the quintessential expression of Marsala, with marked flavors of nuts, dried fruit, spice, caramel, and mandarin orange, drinking somewhere between Sherry and Madeira but perhaps closer to the latter.
