Located in the heart of St. Estephe, Chateau Tronquoy (formerly Tronquoy-Lalande) is one of the oldest estates in the region, having been formed in the 18th century around the remarkable château built for the Tronquoy family on a design by Victor Louis, the architect of the Grand Théâtre in Bordeaux. The estate went through several different owners until 2006 when the property, then sadly in need of modernization, was acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, proprietors of nearby Chateau Montrose as well as several other estates, who embarked on a large-scale program to restore the winemaking facilities. All of the Bouygues family’s properties are overseen by Hervé Berland, formerly Managing Director at Mouton Rothschild. The 75-acre vineyard here is planted mostly to Merlot and Cabernet, Sauvignon with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Tronquoy is known for producing flavorful, character-filled wines that drink well during their first two decades of life, and that is what we have here: this is a rich, ripe, round and fleshy Bordeaux packed with sweet dark red fruit and finishing with dark chocolate, espresso, and currants.
