The Copertinot Cooperative was established in 1935 when a group of visionary growers from a tiny town in the heart of the Salento’s winegrowing area decided to produce higher quality wine from their traditional indigenous grapes. The resulting wines emphasized the terroir of the region and the Copertino DOC was eventually established in 1976. Today the cooperative numbers 300 members, each of whom manages his or her own harvest. The area under vine is 750 acres, planted mostly to Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, and Primitivo. This Riserva, made only in the best vintages, is mostly Noegroamaro with a small percentage of Malvasia Nera blended in; full and rich, it has aromas of leather and ripe red fruits and is warm and rich on the palate with complex tones and flavors of almonds and black currants.
