A los Vinteros Bravos is the project of Chilean winemaker Leonardo Erazo of Rogue Vine and Altos Las Hormigas. Working with selected small growers in the region of Itata, in the south of Chile, he is making wines that celebrate and help finance these growers who have been rapidly disappearing in this region of old vines and ancestral winemaking techniques. Pais is an ancient grape variety brought to Chile by the conquistadores in the late 16th century, and the vines Erazo is working with are at least 150 years old and could be as much as 300. In the hands of many, the grape produces wines that are decidedly rustic, but Erazo’s version, done in cement tanks, is fresh, elegant, and full of life.
