The timbered home that houses this family-owned estate in Hainfeld, in the Pfalz region of Germany, was built in 1619, but the estate in its current form is far more recent than that. In 1990 Annette Borell and Thomas Diehl married and created Borell-Diehl by joining their families' three wineries into one. Starting with a little more than 12 acres, they have since expanded to nearly 80 acres. And oldest son George is now poised to take over the leadership of the estate. Their rose is made entirely from Saint Laurent, an aromatic black grape variety widely planted throughout central Europe; it is simple, fun, fresh, and delicious . . . and a bargain in a liter bottle.
