Based in the Vinho Verde region of northwestern Portugal, Bojo de Luhar represents a partnership between grape grower and winemaker Antonio Sousa and American wine importer Savio Soares. Sousa works exclusively with indigenous grape varieties and farms biodynamically, adding one unusual element to the winemaking process: he adds ground chestnut flowers to the grapes during fermentation to help stabilize the winemaking process. This is an orange wine, produced from a tiny 30-year--old parcel of Azal and Arinto situated on a slope near the Tâmega River; the grapes were almost entirely destemmed and put in amphorae to start fermentation, then, after the addition of the chestnut flowers, sealed in plastic wrap for nine months of skin-contact fermentation. The result is an intensely characterful wine, fresh and clean, with a hint of tannin and a touch of salinity.
