Located in the furthest corner of the Franschoek Valley, the Boekenhoutskloof Winery dates from 1776. The farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout,” bookenhout being the name of an indigenous Cape beech tree. In 1993 Marc Kent bought the property, restored it, and began a new vineyard planting programme that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. Today Boekenhoutskloof remains a relatively small estate of just ten acres of vines around the winery itself, but its production is anything but. In recent years it has grown to a 360,000-case operation thanks in large part to the addition of the Porcupine Ridge, Wolftrap and Chocolate Block brands, sourcing fruit from 40 different growers who are contracted so that the Boekenhoutskloof team can control the viticulture. The Chocolate Block is basically a Rhone-style Syrah-driven blend that includes small amounts of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet, and Viognier. The wine’s exotic aromas of red and black berries and its rich, broad and smoothly-textured palate make for a crow-pleasing wine that has reached iconic status worldwide.
