A native of Malaga who married an American, Jorge Ordoñez has spent the last 30 years shuttling between Massachusetts and Spain to search out quality wines for the American market and, in fact, he now owns, or has an ownership stake in, the majority of the wineries he represents. Bodegas Jorge Ordóñez Málaga, located in Ordóñez’s hometown, was founded in 2004. A partnership between Ordóñez and the Kracher family of Austria, the winery was founded with the goal of resuscitating the centuries long tradition of winemaking in Málaga, which was destroyed by the phylloxera plague in the 19th century. And while their focus from the start was on revitalizing the tradition of unfortified sweet winemaking, Ordóñez and Kracher were inspired to produce a fresh and dry Moscatel, "Botani" being the result. Made entirely from Muscat of Alexandria from vines planted between 1946 and 1975, this is a crisp, pure, and textured white with an intense peachy and citrusy palate.
