Bodegas Belote is truly a unique winery, located between the towns of Zamora, Valladolid and Léon, near the Portuguese border in northwestern Spain. But that location isn't what makes it so special; rather, it's the fact that the wines are vinified and aged in caves that were dug more than five centuries ago, created specifically for storing wine. Because of their constant levels of temperature and humidity throughout the year, the caves still provide excellent conditions fo wine production. And, when the winery was started in 2012, one of the founders' motivations was that making use of the old caves would help to recover an important piece of the region's cultural heritage. Focus here is entirely on two local grapes, Albarin for white wines and Prieto Picudo for the reds. Prieto Picudo is characteristically low in tannin and high in acidity, and this version also features aromas and flavors of dark plums and black cherries.
