Bodegas Albamar is located in Cambados, in the O Salnés sub-region of Rías Baixas. Xurxo Alba’s family had been making wine here or generations but it wasn’t until Xurxo finished his oenological studies that they started bottling and commercializing their own wines in 2006. The family owns a bit more than forty acres but sources additional grapes from smallholder farmers throughout the region. Xurxo (“Jorge” in Castilian) farms and makes sure his farmers farm as naturally as possible, as much as the region permits. Under his direction, the winery now produces a full range of wines, white, red, and sparkling, eighteen in all, and while his calling card has always been his Albarino, Xurxo is an enthusiastic standard-bearer for some of the less well known grapes of the region, as in this red, a blend of Mencía, Caiño Blanco, and Espadeiro. Done in stainless steel and aged twelve month I neutral barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a relatively low-alcohol (11%) red with vibrant acidity and crunchy minerality.
