Giovanni Celeste Benvenuto’s wine story has two threads. At the age of 18 he left his native Abruzzo for Calabria, where he earned a degree in agronomy at the Mediterranean University. Simultaneously, he set out to cultivate the plot of land that had belonged to his grandfather and to make a career as a sommelier. By reviving his grandfather’s vines, Benvenuto has saved from extinction a native Calabrian white grape variety called Zibibbo di Pizzo. Here Benvenuto gives the Zibibbo grape the “orange” treatment, giving the juice forty days of skin contact. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a vibrant and aromatic expression of the Zibibbo grape.
