Giovanni Celeste Benvenuto’s wine story has two threads. At the age of 18 he left his native Abruzzo for Calabria, where he earned a degree in agronomy at the Mediterranean University. Simultaneously, he set out to cultivate the plot of land that had belonged to his grandfather and to make a career as a sommelier. By reviving his grandfather’s vines, Benvenuto has saved from extinction a native Calabrian white grape variety called Zibibbo di Pizzo. The wine he makes from this grape is fresh and dry, with aromas and flavors of dried herbs and flowers as well as melon, lemon, apricots and ginger.
