The Caprai family has almost single-handedly revived the Montefalco wine region and its indigenous grape varieties. In 2012 Wine Enthusiast named Arnaldo Caprai “European Winery of the Year.” Arnaldo Caprai founded one of Italy’s leading textile companies in 1955, but he so identified with his native Umbria that he bought vineyard land and settled there in 1971. Son Marco joined the family wine venture in 1987 and is today widely regarded as one of Italy’s best and most dynamic young winemakers, an outstanding representative of the new faces of Italian wine. He is known primarily for his intense reds, as exemplified here. A blend of Sagrantino, Sangiovese, and Merlot, this is an intense red with notes of ripe red fruit, full-bodied, rich and dry, with delicate hints of vanilla and a long finish.
