The House of Suntory was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, who was inspired by the sophistication of Western wines and spirits. He wanted not only to blend imported liquors but to develop quintessentially Japanese spirits for his people. One of the more recent additions to the Suntory product line is this Haku Vodka, made from 100% Japanese white rice and using the Suntory proprietary method of bamboo charcoal filtration. Like a sponge, the charcoal absorbs the impurities present in the distillate, eliminating anything that might detract from the taste. This gives the vodka a clean and clear flavor. Moreover, the minerals from the bamboo charcoal add a remarkably smooth and mellow character.
