Southern Comfort (occasionally referred to as SoCo) is a fruit, spice, and whiskey flavored liqueur produced since 1874. It is made from a blend of whiskey, peach, orange, banana, vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon flavors. The spirit is the creation of an Irish bartender Martin Wilkes Heron. He infused the best Bourbons he could find with vanilla bean, a few pieces of orange, a few cloves, half a cinnamon stick, a few cherries and about a quarter of a lemon and let it sit for a few days. Right before it was finished, Martin would usually add honey or a different sweetener. In 1889 he patented his famous creation and it went on to win a gold medal at the 1904 World's Fair in Paris. When prohibition began, Martin stopped production and then died a few months later. He left the recipe to his protege Grant Peoples and the SoCo torch is carried on. VEGETARIAN, VEGAN.
