Rhum Saint James dates from 1765, when the first rum was distilled at Habitation Trou Vaillant on the island of Martinique and exported for sale in North America. Cointreau acquired the distillery in 1973 and, in 1986, along with other distilleries on the island, Saint James was granted AOC (protected designation of origin) status by the French government. Rhum agricole is the French term for sugarcane juice rum, a style of rum originally distilled in the French Caribbean islands from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Rhum is the term that typically distinguishes it in French-speaking locales from the rum made with molasses in other parts of the West Indies. This white version from St. James is a clear reflection of fresh cane sugar, with a very well-balanced vegetal and fruity character and wonderful aromatic power.
