Plantation Rums are the “grands crus” rums of the Caribbean. They are effectively the creation of Alexander Gabriel, who took over the Cognac producer, Maison Ferrand, in 1989, reviving sales while sustaining the house’s level of quality. Some years on he traveled the Caribbean, in search of the best rums of the region, and wound up creating Plantation as an artisanal range of rums reflecting the best terroirs of the tropics. This rum was created by Alexandre Gabriel, the cellar master of Plantation, and David Wondrich, author of the book Imbibe! It is a tribute to the esteemed Reverend Stiggins whose favorite drink was the “pineapple rum” in The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. Not intended for sale, the rum was created to share among colleagues and friends at Tales of the Cocktail 2014. Victim of its own success, it is now available in the United States. It has a rich tropical fruit bouquet and a palate that opens with a structured pleasant sensation of ripe banana, pineapple, and spices layered in a smoky finish.
