Brothers John and Hugh Stevenson started a brewery in Oban in the 1790s but converted it to a distillery in 1794; it stayed in the Stevenson family until it was bought by J. Walter Higgin in 1883. Today, over 100 years later, Oban Distillery remains substantially the same as it was after Higgin’s refurbishment. Oban is well known for its gentle, dry, honey-and-fruit character. The distilleries in Diageo’s “Classic Malts of Scotland” series produce an annual special release Distiller's Edition, limited bottlings that undergo a different aging process in refill dessert wine casks. The Oban Distiller's Edition is one year older than the typical 14-year aging, the final two years in the barrel being spent in a Montilla Fino cask. It has a fruity nose with hints of grape, citrus and smoke and a palate that is full and rich with complex notes of butterscotch, caramel and toffee which lead to a lingering smoky and sweet finish.
