Lagavulin Bay, on the south shores of Islay, is said to have housed as many as ten illicit stills in the 1700s, but it wasn’t until 1816 that a man by the name of John Johnston purchased a license and began to build the distillery as we know it today. Seemingly little has changed in the more than 200 years since. Lagavulin’s 12-year is an annual release, this being the 2012 Edition, a smoky, zesty whisky with masses of character. There is sea spray and lemon zest on the nose, candied lemons and barnyard notes on the palate, and the finish is long and smoky, with notes of treacle and honey.
