Onetime film and TV producer Daniel de la Nuez got interested in distilling a few years ago, inspired by a friend of his who was already “doing it himself.” De la Nuez launched his project, Forthave, in January of 2017 in the Pfizer building on the border between Bed-Stuy and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. He is currently producing four spirits: Blue, an American-style dry gin; an amaro called Marseille; an aperitivo called Red, his take on Campari; and this Genepi. Genepi is an iconic Alpine botanical associated with the kingdom of Savoy and the regions in France, Switzerland, and Italy that once made up that kingdom. It's been used for centuries to flavor liqueurs, digestifs and various tonics. The flavor profile falls somewhere in between modern absinthe and chartreuse. While exhibiting significant sweetness, its strong herbal quality keeps it nicely balanced.
