Onetime film and TV producer Daniel de la Nuez got interested in distilling a few years ago, inspired by a friend of his who was already “doing it himself.” De la Nuez launched his project, Forthave, in January of 2017 in the Pfizer building on the border between Bed-Stuy and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Starting with three spirits: Red, an aperitivo; Blue, an American dry gin; and this amaro, Marseille, he has since added four more items including a nocino and a coffee liqueur. De la Nuez has created his Marseille amaro on the basis of “the secret recipe of four medieval thieves.” The distillery’s name comes from Richard Forthave, who, according to legend, developed an herbal tonic for these thieves to protect them from the disease when they wanted to rob a plague-ravaged ship that had traveled from Tripoli to Marseille. The Forthave amaro blend features cinnamon, eucalyptus and honey. An interesting alternative to Campari, it has depth, warmth and a mellow sweetness, with a bitterness that doesn’t take over.
