In 1987, Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr. fulfilled a lifelong dream of reviving an old family bourbon recipe by starting the Bulleit Distilling Company. Inspired by his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit, who made a high-rye whiskey between 1830-1860, Tom left a successful law practice and risked everything on this venture. As was true in those first days, Bulleit (including this rye) is still made in small batches. First produced in 2011, Bulleit Rye took the double gold medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition in 2013. The nose is all cherries and vanilla, with subtle notes of leather and tobacco; on the palate it is spicy and fruity with a smoky finish carried by cinnamon, allspice, and a touch of sweetness.
