Founded in 1815 by John McDougall, Ardbeg's white-washed walls can be found nestling in a rocky cove on Islay's southern tip. It today enjoys something of a cult-like following, but that was not always the case. In the 1980s and 1990s, production slowed to a trickle and the future of the distillery hung in the balance as only a small number of casks were laid down. Things obviously worked out though, and Ardbeg is again at the forefront on the Scotch single malt scene. Launched in 2017, An Oa was the first new permanent expression from Ardbeg in almost a decade. Named for the southernmost point of Islay, whose towering cliffs give it protection from the Atlantic, An Oa is drawn from Ardbeg’s “Gathering Vat,” in which whiskies aged in a variety of different casks (Pedro Ximenez, ex-bourbon, and virgin oak) mingle for a time, with other casks added periodically, solera-style. Given this technique, the peat is less intense than in other Ardbegs, weaving in and out along with notes of grapefruit, gingerbread, and some more raw petrol notes that linger on the finish.
