The Watanable Distillery is a small shochu distillery in the town of Tano, about twenty minutes away from downtown Miyazaki. Launched in 1914, it is today run by fourth-generation Koichiro Watanabe. Watanabe Distillery is completely devoted to capturing the natural essence of its ingredients. This begins at their farm, where the company’s workers harvest all of their potatoes by hand. A bit of soil is deliberately also left on the potatoes to bring more richness to their flavor. The “Natsu No Mannen” is a lower-alcohol 20%) shochumeant to be served over ice or with a splash of soda water; it features floral aromas of lavender and honeysuckle and lightly sweet tropical flavors with a slight touch of caramel.
