You need to go back five generations, well into the early years of the 19th century, to locate the beginnings of the Niepoort family’s association with the Douro region of Portugal and the wine trade. Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, as the name might suggests, was born in Holland but moved to Portugal with his wife to become a negociant of Port wines. Today, all those years and generation later, the company he began in 1842 is run by Dirk Niepoort, who is arguably one of the most influential forces on the Portuguese wine scene today. In addition to running the family port business, Niepoort has, in recent years, become increasingly involved in making dry table wines. Like its white counterpart, Coche, Charme is meant to have a Burgundian style, although produced entirely from indigenous Portuguese grapes. The blend in this vintage heavily favors Tinto Roriz and Touriga Franca from vines that are 70-100+ years old. The wine is all about elegance and balance, with an extremely discreet use of oak set against a delicate structure and superb acidity.
