The modern age for Leoville Poyferre began with its acquisition by the Cuvelier family from the Lalandes in the 1920s. A family of wine merchants, the Cuveliers have a long history in the Bordeaux wine trade going back to the 1840s. The arrival of Didier Cuvelier as the head of Léoville Poyferré in 1979 marked a new era for the quality of the wines and the restoration of the château itself. The château and the surrounding buildings have recently been entirely rebuilt and refurbished and now fully reflect all the efforts made in the vineyard and the cellars to improve the quality of the wines. The wine is always a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot added in. The 2016 vintage shows a serious depth of color and offers velvet textures, waves of concentrated and perfectly ripe fruit, with great length and purity.
