Chateau Laroque dates back to the 12th Century, but the estate as we know it today, with its magnificent chateau, was constructed in the 17th century by Marquis de Rochefort-Lavie. In 1935 the property was purchased by the Beaumartin family from the descendants of the Marquis. The vineyard here is quite large by local standards — at slightly more than 150 acres it is in fact the largest in St. Emilion — and is planted to a mix of Merlot and Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc; only 100 acres are, however, classified as “grand cru classe” with the remaining ranked as “grand cru.” Les Tour de Laroque” is the estate’s second wine. This 2018 is almost entirely Merlot, with 3% Cabernet Franc blended in; silky, polished and refined, built more on finesse than power, it is medium-to full-bodied with firm, tightly-knit tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, mineral finish.
