Located in Alenquer, just north of Lisbon, Casa Santos Lima is known for producing high-quality value-driven wines. Founded at the turn of the 20th century by Joaquim Santos Lima, one of the most renowned producers and exporters of his day, the estate is now helmed by his granddaughter Maria João and great-grandson José Luis, who assumed leadership in 1990. The large property comprises more than 700 acres in the Estremadura, with some of the vineyard land not yet in production; indeed, the first bottled wines from this estate were launched as recently as 1996. The “Lab” in the wine’s name is meant to suggest an experimental or innovative approach to winemaking, wines that might be made with unique blends or techniques, often focused on fresh and fruit-forward flavors with a modern style. This red, made from three native Portuguese grapes plus some Syrah, is rich, warm, and spicy, with lots of ripe red fruits and fresh yet fine tannins.
