Canadian Club was founded by Hiram Walker, a successful grain merchant, in 1858. Early on it became known in America as “Club Whisky” because it was sold exclusively at the finer men’s clubs of the day; and then, when the U.S. government began to require Canadian distillers to label their product with a “country of origin” indication, it became Canadian Club. From its earliest “Hiram Walker” days it has been a smooth, easy-drinking whisky made from the finest Canadian-grown grains, mainly rye, rye malt, and barley malt. This 9 Year Reserve comes across as an older, more mature version of Canadian Club 1858, with a greater rye influence, and the nine years of aging brings out the oak notes of the barrel and results in a spicier, more robust taste profile.
